2025 Hurricane Forecast Predicts Low Risk for Florida’s Atlantic Coast But Boca Raton Homeowners Should Still Prepare

Fluffy white clouds fill the sky, creating a serene and dreamy atmosphere. No text or other objects are visible.

As we head into the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, residents along Florida’s east coast—especially in Boca Raton and nearby communities—can breathe a little easier. The latest forecast predicts a below-average risk of a major hurricane striking our area. But make no mistake: preparation remains essential.

According to Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Science, the 2025 season is expected to be more active than the 20-year average:

  • 17 named storms (vs. average of 14)

  • 9 hurricanes (vs. average of 7)

  • 4 major hurricanes (vs. average of 3)

  • 85 named storm days (vs. an average of 69)

These projections are fueled by unusually warm Atlantic Ocean temperatures and potential La Niña conditions, which can intensify hurricane formation across the Atlantic basin.

Florida's Atlantic Coast: Lower Risk, But Not Risk-Free For 2025 Hurricane Forecast

While the Atlantic may see heightened activity, Florida’s Atlantic coast—including Boca Raton—faces only a 26% chance of a major hurricane making landfall. That’s down from previous years. Still, there’s a 92% chance a named storm will hit somewhere in Florida and a 35% chance that a major storm will come within 50 miles of the state in 2025 Hurricane Forecast.

As University of Miami meteorologist Brian McNoldy puts it:

“We always need to be paying attention to the storms that are out there—some of them could have our name on them.”

When Should Boca Raton Be Most Alert?

Relaxing in a hammock on a tropical beach with palm trees and clear blue sky. Sandy beach stretches to the ocean. Peaceful vibe.

The peak hurricane season for South Florida runs from August through October, with October historically bringing the most intense storms. It’s during this time that homeowners should be especially vigilant.

Why Preparation Matters—Even in a “Low-Risk” Year.

Palm trees bending in strong winds, surrounded by mist and high waves, create a stormy and intense scene along a coast.

The 2024 hurricane season brought 18 named storms, including five major hurricanes. One, Hurricane Beryl, made history as the earliest Category 5 storm ever recorded and left massive destruction in Houston.

Back in 2017, Hurricane Irma caused widespread devastation across Florida—proof that even a single storm can have lasting consequences.
